About the Skipper

Our passionate Skipper, Gary Stewart has been sailing for 28 years. His father first introduced him to boats at a young age. Gary first started working as a delivery skipper accumulating 87000 NM delivering yachts for clients to various locations internationally over a period of years. During that period, he was a sailing instructor here locally in Durban.

Soon after that, Gary met his wife and they chartered for an American based company in the Seychelles for a year living on board. Then they came back to their home country RSA where Gary became the Quality controller/ Delivery Skipper for a Yacht builder who manufacture Royal Cape luxury sailing Catamarans.

Soon after that (11 years ago) he took a prospective buyer by the name of Mark Taylor (eLan Property Group’s CEO) out for a test sail on a vessel. Mark and Gary immediately clicked and Gary was offered a job to join the eLan Group as a full-time skipper. Within the last 11 years, he has taken Mark and his family up to Mozambique several times on fishing holidays. The Spirit of eLan has done more than 2000 local charters in the Durban area, with a mixture of fishing and corporate charters both for local, international and local Royalty.
